Omen Longboards started with the Carbon Matrix, which was the collaboration between a bunch of local Seattle skaters including Nate Blackburn and Trevor Preston. Omen didn’t have a physical location at the time, so the Matrix was outsourced to a local company. Due to the relatively low price tag (compared to other carbon boards) Omen gained some notoriety pretty quickly. After a little under a year, Omen procured space in a north Seattle garage and started producing the first Pike prototypes.

The countdown is on for the third annual Whistler Longboard Festival, which features a downhill skateboard race on the winding road at the Whistler Sliding Centre — 12 corners (including seven 180-degree hairpin turns) and a total vertical drop over 300 metres over 1.6km of road.

Set at the base of Blackcomb Mountain is this gnarly 1.6 km road that features a 1000ft vertical foot drop as riders grip and drift through seven 180 degree hairpins with 12 corners. Imagine snow boardercross meets the Formula 1 of skateboards as 4 man heats rip down the mountain.

Kelly’s loss was Andrew Chapman’s gain. He stayed out of the crash to take his first major win on the circuit, edging out Max Wipperman, who placed second, while Reimer recovered fastest to take the final spot on the podium. For Chapman, a 23-year-old racer from London, Ontario, it was all about opportunity.

Longboard Festival to make History in Whistler

The main event of the festival is the Whistler Sliding Centre Downhill presented by Arbor Skateboards, which runs July 13 to July 15. July 13 is a rider-only day for practicing and course inspection, although spectators are invited to watch the second day of training on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Whistler Sliding Centre on Blackcomb.
