Omen Longboards started with the Carbon Matrix, which was the collaboration between a bunch of local Seattle skaters including Nate Blackburn and Trevor Preston. Omen didn’t have a physical location at the time, so the Matrix was outsourced to a local company. Due to the relatively low price tag (compared to other carbon boards) Omen gained some notoriety pretty quickly. After a little under a year, Omen procured space in a north Seattle garage and started producing the first Pike prototypes.

The birth of Cruisin’ for a Cause came out from sitting at our boardshops’ booth (Mad Monkey). I overheard a guy talking about people skating for a single cause and the great success they had. I began thinking of ways I could make a difference, especially with firsthand knowledge of what is was like being in a similar situation with Brain Injuries.

Bradford Teen Makes Big Gains On Longboard Racing Circuit

Longboarding. Skateboarding. The terms conjure up an instant image: kids, curbs and skateparks. But what about gravity sports? That’s the new name for downhill longboard racing that is putting the sport on a more professional footing. Says ‘Gravity sports’ and the image is one of aerodynamic protective helmets, leather suits and speed. Bradford, with its Bare Beaunz skate shop and owner Beau Neumeyer’s links to longboard racing, has been a hot spot for gravity sports. Neumeyer organized the first legal longboard street race in Ontario — Go Fast & Trick 4 Kids — which was sanctioned by the town. And the town is producing champions.

The 2011 IGSA Downhill Skateboarding World Cup Series will be remembered by the dominant performances put in by some of racing’s biggest stars, bigger events that spread the sport further around the globe and the fierce level of competition that became common place. Prior to the season Kevin Reimer, the all conquering downhill skater of 2010 suffered a severe leg injury. This left him off his skateboard and unable to defend his newly earned IGSA World Cup Series Championship.

My experience at the Maryhill Festival of Speed 2011, a five-day gravity sports summer event, exceeded my wildest expectations. As my first real downhill event, I felt overwhelmingly intimidated, but I couldn’t have picked a better hill and a more encouraging group of skaters.
