Reader’s Choice: Analysis, Rants and Raves
April 30, 2013 – 2:48 PM | No Comment

The AXS Gear/Concrete Wave Readers’ Choice survey yielded a tremendous amount of information. Almost 4,000 people took the time to fill out the survey, with an average time of 14-plus minutes to complete! That represents almost 40 days’ worth of time! We produced a fully comprehensive listing of all companies in the Concrete Wave Buyer’s Guide. But here, for the purpose of space, we will address some of the key findings from the survey. We instituted two distinct changes this year. First, we changed the actual questions to reflect what brands are actually owned by readers. Rather than focusing on the word favorite,” we wanted to know what people actually had in their quiver.

Boulevard Boards Makes Laurel Road Home

Hector Mascaros has found a new home for his Boulevard Boards skateboard shop now located at 126 Laurel Road.

Boulevard Boards opened originally in Greenlawn in May 2009 but when Mascaros’ lease was terminated in 2010, he sought a new spot. The store’s current location is still close to the Town of Huntington’s Greenlawn Skate Park as well as its newest skateboard venue at Veterans Park on Bellerose Avenue.  The store sells skateboards, longboards, helmets, pads, clothing, and shoes. The store carries some of the major skateboard and skate shoe brands, but true to their community spirit they stock skateboard’s manufactured right here on Long Island by companies like Chapman, Hazel, and Vigilante.  Along with skate shoes by Duff and Nike, they also carry clothes and gear.Boulevard can also help skaters ‘trick out’ their boards with assorted skate accessories and expert advice. “We can build you a board from the ground up,” said Mascaros. Being an active skater himself Mascaros has first-hand knowledge when it comes to making a decision on equipment. “Boulevard Boards wants to see skateboarding grow and in this kind of climate we know we need to help maintain the sport through these tough times,” said Hector “it isn’t easy for any of us, but we listen to our customers and do our best to meet their needs.” The new Veterans Park Skate Park has certainly been a good thing for business but given their location, they cannot be totally reliant on the park.  Boulevard Boards sponsors skateboarders to promote the shop and the sport in competitions. A sponsored skateboarder may receive boards or shoes by the skate shop to use in an event.  One local skater Boulevard sponsors is Mikey Taylor, who also works at the store.  “I really like Boulevard.  This is a friendly place that has been a great opportunity for me and they have been really helpful,” said Mikey. “Boulevard is more than a skate shop,” Marcolos said. “We try to mentor kids new to the sport and provide advice to the experienced skateboarder too.”
